Antelope Slot Canyon in Arizona is an unforgettable place to visit. It is on Indian-owned land and you can take a tour for a few dollars. The Indian owners transport you to the entrance and give you a half hour guided tour of the wonders to behold, as shown in this Gallery. Photographers, like me, can pay extra to be allowed to stay in the canyon after the tour leaves, to photograph it and appreciate the wonders in very quiet solitude. We arranged our stay to be there at high-noon (when the sun is directly overhead). According to Indian legend, that's when the spirits come to visit the canyon. You will view the entire happening by looking at this Gallery of my photographs. Now, legend put aside, what happens is that the sunlight enters the canyon (through a "chimney") like a bright spotlight that warms up the air, ground, and walls. The warm air rises and causes air within the confines of the canyon to rise, which creates a wind that disturbs and suspends the very-fine sand on the floor of the canyon. The sunlight then reflects off of this fine airborne sand creating the "Spirits" that you will see. Scientifically, what you see is termed a "Tyndal Cone." I have never in my life been in an environment as magical as Antelope Slot Canyon. One moves from total darkness into bright light while traversing through very narrow passages as well as through large "rooms." The sandstone walls reflect and refract the light entering from above into many different hues of color, as the photographs show. It is really a very spiritual and overwhelming experience. If you would please leave comments as you view each individual photograph, it would be greatfully appreciated. THANK YOU!
