Description
African anhinga (Anhinga melanogaster rufa or Anhinga rufa) spreading its wings. This waterbird, also known as the African darter, has a long snake-like neck and dagger-like bill that is used to catch fish. It uses its webbed feet to swim underwater. Often, only its head and neck are visible above the water, leading to its other name of snakebird. It reaches a length of around 85 centimetres. The African anhinga is found around water in tropical sub-Saharan Africa. Photographed in Intaka Island Bird Sanctuary, South Africa.
