Description
Otto Dix was a German painter, printmaker, and draftsman who utilized harsh, critical realism to depict the corruption and social apathy of German society in the aftermath of World War I. He experimented with various printmaking techniques, such as etching, lithography, and woodcut, and produced around three hundred prints during his lifetime. Dix became preoccupied with subjects like veterans, urban decay, prostitution, and the destructive power of sex, and his experiences as a machine gunner during the war influenced his art. He created an epic series of fifty intaglios in the early 1920s that portrayed the devastating effects of trench warfare, including rotting corpses, bombed cities, and landscapes, as well as the dehumanizing impact of war on soldiers. These prints have been compared to Goya's The Disasters of War and showcase Dix's critical eye toward German society.
